In 2009 the GAA launched its Social Initiative in response to a concern that because of changing social patterns, older men in our communities are at risk of or indeed actually experiencing isolation and loneliness. Former President Mary McAleese, who is now Patron of the GAA Social Initiative, recognized this trend at first hand and in promoting the need for action observed that these men ‘would welcome the chance to revive their social lives again in ways they would enjoy'.

The Social Initiative now exists as an island-wide project, utilizing the GAA club network as a vehicle to achieve the greatest reach into all communities.

This spring, the Social Initiative, with support from Calor, is promoting in GAA Clubs nationwide a tour of the award-winning comedy "Victor's Dung". The play is written, directed by and stars former Leitrim footballer Seamus O'Rourke and promises an evening of high quality entertainment.

Glenville GAA Club is delighted to present ‘Victor's Dung' on Friday, May 4th in theCommunity Hall, Watergrasshill at 8pm and are very pleased to issue this invitation to attend.

A number of clubs in Cork have already become active participants in the GAA's Social Initiative. This event offers these clubs and all others the opportunity to provide an enjoyable social occasion for their members, especially those for whom such occasions might be an increasingly rare event. It may also be the initial step towards a club becoming involved in the initiative with a view to making a real contribution to the wellbeing of its older members.
